Service Description

Strong public speaking begins with strong fundamentals. In this engaging, foundational course, students will explore the essential skills of effective communication while getting an introduction to the world of competitive speech and debate. Through a wide variety of speech events—including impromptu speaking, dramatic and humorous interpretation, poetry and prose performance, and both solo and team debate—students will develop confidence, creativity, and clarity in their verbal expression. Core skills students will learn include memorization techniques, vocal delivery and projection, phrasing, gestures and body language, argument development, evidence use, and more. Whether the goal is to one day compete or simply build confidence speaking in front of others, this course offers a supportive environment to develop strong, lasting communication skills. Students participate in “tournament-style” practice and receive constructive feedback from instructors and peers to help them grow. This course is a required prerequisite for all of our advanced classes and competitive teams. It is designed to help students feel comfortable and confident when speaking in front of others—an invaluable skill that supports success both inside and outside the classroom.
